As a nation, we spend billions of pounds on the festive period every year – and a significant proportion of this comes from sources other than savings, such as loans and credit cards.

Insurance company LV= says that we will spend £294 each on gifts this year, totalling £13.5 billion for the whole country.

Statistics from Abbey indicate that we will fork out £3.45 billion of our savings on Yuletide – but according to money.co.uk, 71 per cent of us are using whatever cash we have at the moment to fund this spending rather than savings that we have put together especially for Christmas.

The website states that this suggests Britons will have a black hole worth £8 billion in their finances come the new year – adding further problems to deal with on top of any other debts and interest accrued over the rest of the year. Some borrowers are considering taking out a debt consolidation loan in order to make their finances easier to manage.

Hidden debts are a big problem in the UK – about 25 per cent of all UK adults hide the problem of money owed from their close friends and family, according to AXA.

With each of these Britons more than £4,000 in the red in this way on average, the issue is a significant one.

But why does this happen and how can it be resolved?

The facts

According to AXA’s study, 12.2 million people hide the fact that they owe large sums of money on credit cards and store cards, as well as loans and overdrafts, from their family, partner or friends.

The main reason for this? Embarrassment. Just over three in ten people say they are too red-faced to come clean, while 23 per cent are scared of how others will react to the news, 21 per cent have let the debt get out of control and 14 per cent had no idea how bad their finances had become.

About four in ten Britons say they lie to their loved ones about money, with those aged between 19 and 30 the most likely to do so and 36 to 50-year-olds having the highest levels of hidden debt.

People in Scotland are the most prone to lying about the money they owe, while those in the east Midlands are the least likely to do so.

The plans, which were announced earlier this week, will mean that property owners whose mortgage books are bought by third parties from their original lenders will be safeguarded by Financial Services Authority (FSA) regulations.

Responding to the development, Robert Sinclair, director at the Association of Mortgage Intermediaries, said: “The key for this is to provide more protection for borrowers, in terms of giving a more consistent regime that will allow things to be compared on a more level playing field.”

However, he added that he is not sure exactly how the rules will be applied since most of the mortgage books have already been sold on and the FSA may find it difficult to apply the changes retrospectively.

It is unfortunate that the government has to implement the regulatory measures “post-event”, Mr Sinclair concluded.

Many landlords in the UK may be facing difficulties in making their mortgages repayments, it has been found.

According to research conducted by Direct Line for Business, more than a fifth of landlords are worried about cash flow.

In addition, almost one in ten have cancelled insurance in order to save costs, potentially putting them at risk of future debt problems if an unexpected emergency were to occur.

It was also discovered that financial concerns are causing 22 per cent of landlords to lose sleep.

Head of Direct Line for Business Kate Syred said: “With high numbers of landlords cancelling insurance policies to save money, if something were to go wrong, tenants may still find themselves without a roof over their heads.”

Recently, a new government initiative was announced which is designed to help people struggling to meet their mortgage repayments.

The campaign will provide information to consumers and will encourage them to get help by talking to their lenders when they are experiencing problems.

A considerable number of people securing mortgages in order to buy properties have managed to avoid paying stamp duty, it has been claimed.

New figures produced by the Council of Mortgage Lenders (CML) suggest that one-third of such people did not have to pay the tax in September due to the government’s temporary £175,000 nil-rate threshold.

As of the beginning of next year, the rules governing the tax will return to their pre-credit crunch stipulations, under which all properties over £125,000 will be subject to stamp duty.

The CML suggested that there were around 6,200 first-time buyer loans for properties worth between £125,000 and £175,000 in September, which represented 32 per cent of all loans to such purchasers.

CML economist Paul Samter said: “As the end date for the stamp duty concession approaches, we may see sustained levels of activity at the lower end of the market in a traditionally quiet time.”
